22 Carnival cruise passengers robbed in Mexico

Twenty-two passengers on?Carnival Splendor?were robbed at gunpoint Thursday while on a ship-sponsored tour in?Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.?
At least one Mexican media outlet said the passengers were returning by bus to their ship at approximately 5 p.m. after spending time in El Nogalito, a tourist area known for its lush natural setting. Masked assailants stopped the bus and robbed the cruisers of their money, watches, cameras and other valuables.?
There were no injuries and all passengers were returned safely to the ship, Carnival said in a statement.?Numerous authorities were notified and responded to investigate, as well as assist the affected passengers, Carnival said.?
According to?informador.mx.com, the bandits have yet to be apprehended.?
Carnival also apologized to the passengers for the "unfortunate and disturbing event" and said it is working with passengers to reimburse them for lost valuables and assist with lost passports or other forms of identification.?
?The tour in question ? a guided nature trail excursion sold and booked through the line ? has been suspended until further notice.?

NPD: Apple grabs over a quarter of the mobile PC business in Q4 2011 (including iPads), HP tops with laptops
Just what is a "mobile PC" these days? According to market research firm NPD, that category now includes both tablets and laptops -- and by that definition, Apple is unsurprisingly way ahead of its competitors. Based on its preliminary numbers, Apple shipped 23.4 million mobile PCs in the fourth quarter of 2011 (nearly 80 percent of which were iPads), which was enough to snag a market share of 26.6 percent (and keep it in the top spot for the year). In contrast, the four companies rounding out the top five relied almost entirely on laptops to fill their numbers, with HP coming in at just under a 10 percent market share, followed by Dell, Acer and Lenovo. Looking just at laptops, however, HP comes in first with a 15.5 percent market share, while Apple falls to fifth with just over eight percent. As for tablets, Apple is estimated to have a 59 percent market share for Q4, followed by Amazon at 16.7 percent (based on shipments of 5.3 million), and Samsung, ASUS and Barnes & Noble each in single digits. Montana man fined $1K for instigating police chase
BUTTE, Mont. (AP) ? A Butte man who told officers he instigated a police chase because he always wanted to try it, found out it'll cost him a $1,000 fine to go with his tire damage.
The Montana Standard in Butte reports (http://bit.ly/xZW1B4) 55-year-old John C. Hughes pleaded guilty Thursday in City Court to reckless driving while eluding a peace officer.
The chase began in the pre-dawn hours Thursday when officers reported a man followed a patrol car for seven blocks before pulling his SUV around and taking off at speeds of up to 70 mph. Officers say Hughes was traveling faster than 100 mph on the interstate before officers laid out a spike strip to flatten his tires.
When asked why he started the chase, Hughes said, "I just always wanted to do that," according to the police report.

Microsoft experiments ahead of Windows 8's public beta, is the Start button going the way of the dodo?
I use the Start Button all the time, but only to launch one of the dozen or so applications I have pinned to it, or the search field; never the "All Programs" menus. The Metro UI's default grid view should accommodate that kind of usage fine, or better in fact, so I'm not too concerned.
That said, I'll most likely give Windows 8 a miss, as I did with Vista, since it's such a major overhaul in some ways, then pickup a hopefully more refined Windows 9.

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) ? Mark Zuckerberg may sell about $1.67 billion of Facebook Inc. stock in the company?s initial public offering to pay off taxes he will owe when he exercises options to buy 120 million shares.
The social network?s chief executive officer will owe taxes on gains related to the award of options, the Menlo Park, California-based company said this week in its IPO prospectus. The options were granted to Zuckerberg in 2005 and expire in 2015, and he?ll sell stock to cover liabilities, Facebook said.
?We expect that substantially all of the net proceeds Mr. Zuckerberg will receive upon such sale will be used to satisfy taxes that he will incur upon his exercise of an outstanding stock option to purchase 120,000,000 shares? of common stock, according to the filing.
Zuckerberg, 27, stands to become one of richest people in the world with a stake in Facebook that could be worth as much as $28.4 billion. His company, which filed on Feb. 1 to raise as much as $5 billion in an IPO, is discussing a valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion, two people familiar with the matter said last week.
At the high end of that range, assuming roughly 2.51 billion Facebook shares outstanding, each share may be worth about $39.79. The awarded shares carry an exercise price of 6 cents. Assuming Zuckerberg buys all 120 million shares at that price, his gains would total about $4.77 billion.
Zuckerberg?s tax rate will be 35 percent, said Victor Fleischer, associate professor of law at the University of Colorado. That means his bill would be about $1.67 billion.
Larry Yu, a spokesman for Facebook, declined to comment.
The social network had a valuation of at least $94 billion, or about $40 a share, in an auction of its shares on the private market earlier this week.

Issue 1: Making a Will. If you have an estate plan that is largely based on one or more trusts, you still need to make a Will so you can select your choice for your child?s guardian. While you can still use trusts and name the child as beneficiary, the guardian nomination must be specifically stated in your Will. If you don?t yet have a Will, you need to get started right away.
Issue 2: A guardian has to be qualified. A legal guardian in New York must be at least 18 years old and must either be citizen or a legal resident of the United States. Beyond that, the person is under no obligation to accept the nomination, meaning he or she can refuse to serve as guardian. Because of this, you should make sure that you ask the potential guardian about his or her willingness to serve. You should also name a pair of alternates in your Will in case the other choices cannot or will not serve.
Issue 3: A court will make the final decision. After nominating the guardian in your Will, a judge will make the determination about who becomes your child?s guardian. Although the court will give your choice a lot of consideration, it will not appoint someone who it believes will not serve your child?s best interests. (Reuters) ? Allstate Corp blew past Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, more than doubling its profits as the largest listed home and auto insurer in the United States benefited from lower catastrophe losses and better results in its homeowners business.
Allstate reported a fourth quarter net profit of $724 million, or $1.43 per share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $296 million or 55 cents per share.
Operating earnings of $1.48 compared with a Wall Street consensus estimate of 95 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Allstate said catastrophe losses came to $66 million in the quarter after the favorable effect of reserve releases, against losses of $537 million a year earlier.
Over the last year, Allstate has been trying to raise prices in home and auto lines, while at the same time writing less business in certain markets where it is less profitable.
Allstate said auto net written premiums fell slightly, as it continued to cut unprofitable business in New York and Florida, while net written premiums in homeowners rose as higher premiums offset a decline in policies in force.
Its shares rose 2.4 percent to $30.01 in after-hours trading following the report The shares closed 1.6 percent higher at $29.31

Abeljeckie, A Look Into Her World
Well, hello there everyone, I'm Abeljeckie. My actual name is Jacquelyn, though most (if not everyone) seems to like calling me Jeckie. My username comes from an inside joke with me and my friends, but I feel no need to explain the inside joke as it probably would only be lost on anyone else besides those who know me.
I am currently a 22 year old collage student living in California and studying art programs, in the hopes of someday publishing my in progress graphic novel. But until then I'm working hard, missing home, and hoping to god my family stays in order while I'm away.
I come from Ireland, Shannon to be exact, which is a small town with a small-ish population, and lived there for the first twelve years of my life, until moving to Kerry until I was eighteen, then moving away from home to live with relatives in America, and to study art in a proper school.
The reason I joined this site was mainly because when I was younger my little sister Trinity and I would always play tabletop role playing games, and absolutely loved writing stories together. She was always better then me, but in the past few years I've found that I could give her a run for her money in writing and art.
I found this site while searching for something that would suit my tastes, all of my previous experiences with online role playing have been very, well, to put it lightly; Boring. I've been looking for a more diverse community, a place where there isnt just one or two genres, but nearly all genres I can think of.
Though to be honest I'm more of a lass who enjoys Comedy, horror, and mystery/thrillers, to anything else. And am not too big on romance, or very many supernatural things. I love anything to do with murder, as morbid as it sounds I'm not afraid to explain in full detail about gore, and torture.
I also tend to love bounty hunter type stuff, I recently went with a few friends to see a movie in theaters called "One For The Money" and loved it. Since it was both funny, and had realism in it as well.

Holding information within one's memory for a short while is a seemingly simple and everyday task. We use our short-term memory when remembering a new telephone number if there is nothing to write at hand, or to find the beautiful dress inside the store that we were just admiring in the shopping window. Yet, despite the apparent simplicity of these actions, short-term memory is a complex cognitive act that entails the participation of multiple brain regions. However, whether and how different brain regions cooperate during memory has remained elusive. A group of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in T?bingen, Germany have now come closer to answering this question. They discovered that oscillations between different brain regions are crucial in visually remembering things over a short period of time.
It has long been known that brain regions in the frontal part of the brain are involved in short-term memory, while processing of visual information occurs primarily at the back of the brain. However, to successfully remember visual information over a short period of time, these distant regions need to coordinate and integrate information.
To better understand how this occurs, scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Biological Cybernetics in the department of Nikos Logothetis recorded electrical activity both in a visual area and in the frontal part of the brain in monkeys. The scientists showed the animals identical or different images within short intervals while recording their brain activity. The animals then had to indicate whether the second image was the same as the first one.
The scientists observed that, in each of the two brain regions, brain activity showed strong oscillations in a certain set of frequencies called the theta-band. Importantly, these oscillations did not occur independently of each other, but synchronized their activity temporarily: "It is as if you have two revolving doors in each of the two areas. During working memory, they get in sync, thereby allowing information to pass through them much more efficiently than if they were out of sync," explains Stefanie Liebe, the first author of the study, conducted in the team of Gregor Rainer in cooperation with Gregor H?rzer from the Technical University Graz. The more synchronized the activity was, the better could the animals remember the initial image. Thus, the authors were able to establish a direct relationship between what they observed in the brain and the performance of the animal.
The study highlights how synchronized brain oscillations are important for the communication and interaction of different brain regions. Almost all multi-faceted cognitive acts, such as visual recognition, arise from a complex interplay of specialized and distributed neural networks. How relationships between such distributed sites are established and how they contribute to represent and communicate information about external and internal events in order to attain a coherent percept or memory is still poorly understood.
