FAYETTEVILLE ? The Arkansas baseball team was predicted to win the Southeastern Conference by the league?s coaches Tuesday.
The Razorbacks, who are ranked No. 1 in several preseason polls, return 10 starters and five position players from its 2012 College World Series team. Arkansas received nine of a possible 14 votes as league champions. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams in the preseason poll.
Vanderbilt was second in the preseason poll with three votes, while Kentucky and LSU earned one each.
The Razorbacks also were tabbed as SEC West champs, earning 12 of a possible 14 votes to top LSU and Mississippi State (one vote each). Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama and Auburn were fourth through seventh, respectively, in the SEC West.
Vanderbilt earned 12 of 14 votes to win the SEC East. Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Missouri, respectively, followed the Commodores in the projected SEC East standings.
Arkansas has won two SEC championships (1994, 2004) since entering the conference in 1992. The Razorbacks will aim for their third title when the 2013 season begins against Western Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday.
